Nationally, Oaxaca is rated number one in violence towards women and female suicide. In addition, it is rated one of the top five states in female homicide. MADA is one of the few groups in the state that service women suffering in abusive relationships. Donations are tax deductible and can be made through the Oaxaca Lending Library. Library Grants Scholarship
The Oll scholarship committee has granted a one year scholarship to Pergentino Abasolo Valle for $6,500 pesos. This is to pay for his food at the Rufino Tamayo Hostel.
Pergentino is 16 years old and comes from San Mateo del Mar, Tehuantepec, a very small pueblo on the Oaxacan coast. His family are campesinos: he has two younger siblings. The family cannot help him and they want him to stay in Oaxaca, go to school and learn to support himself.
Pergentino is a small, shy young man who spoke only Huave except when he went to school. He has problems with Spanish and the transition from his small town to the Oaxaca urban life continues to be difficult for him.
One of the requirements for receiving the stipend will be attendance at the Learning Center at least two hours a day, three times a week. He will be involved in tutoring, learning touch typing, introduction to the computer and group activities.

Help Needed for Story Hour

The Bilingual Hour for Children on Saturday at 11 am, with Janet Stanley as maestra, is a victim of its own success! There are so many children that space has become a difficulty. In order to maximize the available space, Janet would like to replace the chairs with children-size stools. The stools cost 80 pesos each and are available for ADOPTION. If you would like to adopt-a-stool, please let us know!

Successful Art Auction
A silent auction of works remaining from last fall’s art auctions was held on Friday, September 29th.  Fifty-one of the remaining works were sold earning more than 22,000 pesos.

Volunteer Coordinator Named
Thanks to Tonee Mello, the Library now has a Volunteer Coordinator, Elaine Vasquez, who along with her spouse Tom, has been the Wednesday  greeters.  Elaine is bright, extraverted, energetic and highly organized.  She says her first task is to learn what the other volunteer positions require, so she will learn the coffee shop and desk jobs as well greeter.  Her next step will be to have a volunteer get-together, get-to-know-each other.  We appreciate Elaine’s enthusiasm and stepping forward for this important position.

Libros Para Pueblos Gift

Libros Para Pueblos recently received a wonderfully generous gift of $1,500 (USD) from John Nicholson of New York City.  Thank you Mr. Nicholson, and you may be assured of your funds benefiting some great Oaxacan kids and their families.

Magazine Donations Needed
The Library has always been dependent on its members for magazine subscriptions and most subscriptions have expired and not been renewed.  Foreign subscription rates are usually about three or four times as expensive as they are in the country of origin.
At the present time, the OLL subscribes to only the National Geographic, Utne Reader, and Archaeology and members donated used copies of other magazines.  The magazine committee wants to order The Economist ($189US), Vanity Fair ($43US) and Time ($150US).  Two hundred dollars from the Rummage Sales has been set aside for these subscriptions but more is needed.  Helen Hines has pledged 100 pesos to help.  Your donation is needed and will be greatly appreciated.

Models Bliss Wilson, Jane Robison and Linda Hannah pose in some of the items you’ll find at the upcoming OLL bazaar.

Rummage Sale Dec. 2nd

Plans are underway for OLL’s Rummage Sale, led once more by Jane Robison who is donating the space at the Casa Colonial.  Except for last year’s Art Auction the rummage sale has always been our biggest money maker!  The date has been set for December. 2nd.  Lots of volunteers will be needed to help sort, price and sell the items.  Please bring your ready-to-be-recycled goodies to the library or to Casa Colonial, Miguel Negrete 105.

Pan & Co on Mondays

On Mondays Pan & Co. will have fresh baked goods for sale at the Library. What a convenient way to add tasty breads and rolls to your life.  They come around 10 am and are gone by 11, so be there or be bereft.

Thanksgiving Dinner Set
Mary Ann Garrett, Missioner of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, announces that the Church will have a noon Thanksgiving Worship Service followed at 2 p.m. by a Potluck Dinner at the church at 209 Constitucion on Thursday, November 23rd.  For more information call 516-0486.

Help a Student During Crisis
During these very troubled times in Oaxaca nobody should be without the means to call a parent or friend. A telephone card, in any denomination you care to give, is a simple lifeline gift, to say we care about Oaxaca’s young people – and their anxious parents as well. Please assist a Oaxaca student with the ability to make a phone call. Many youngsters cannot afford a cell phone. Being stranded when neither taxis nor buses are reliable, can be frightening at best, deadly
serious at worst. Drop off donated phone cards at the Oaxaca Lending Library, Pino Suarez 519, in the “Student Safety” box.  Many thanks for your gift!
And, although YOU are not a target, remember these tips:
• Always carry a phone card or a cell phone for yourself.
• Don’t move about at night without a partner.
• Know where the blockades are located, and choose your routes accordingly.
• Keep your temper and remain courteous.

Organ Institute Newsletter

The Instituto de Órganos Históricos de Oaxaca A.C. is pleased to announce that their Fourth Newsletter is now available for viewing and downloading as a PDF file at the IOHIO web site www.iohio.org.mx.

Movie Nights are Underway

Thanks to the new 35” TV and a new sound system, the library is now hosting a Movie Night every Thursday at 6 p.m. complete with popcorn, candy bars, and drinks.  Thanks to Barry & Jacque Scheinberg’s extensive collection of DVD’s, we have been able to show many classics.  Come and join in for a cheap and fun night.  A 10 pesos donation for admission.  Munchies and liquids also are 10 pesos.

Intercambio On Saturdays
Ed Peterson and Irma Rodriguez are hosting an intercambio every Saturday at the Library at 10 a.m.  This is an excellent opportunity to improve your Spanish and help someone else with his/her English.  No sign-up required, just be there.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

With the political turmoil in Oaxaca, the Library is working hard to stay neutral and in compliance with Mexican law.  For this reason, the Library has found itself verbally attacked and threatened from both sides–the left and the right.

The Board feels that our membership should be aware of these attacks and how we are responding to them. The crisis in Oaxaca has pushed many people, including expatriates, to the extreme left or the extreme right.  A Mexican member of the Library said this is happening in Oaxacan families too, pitting family members against each other. Most of us are old enough to remember how the Viet Nam War polarized Americans against one another. We got through that difficult time and so shall the Oaxacaños survive this crisis.

For several weeks, a group was meeting at the Library to discuss the situation in Oaxaca.  Because the discussions were political in nature, the Board checked with Mark Leyes, U.S. Consular Agent in Oaxaca, to confirm that this was not violating Mexican law. He agreed that discussions were acceptable but activism would not be.

A few weeks ago, we received a letter from Linda Anderson (possibly a pseudonym) complaining about”… self described anarchist-communist activist George Salzman,” whose views of the situation had been posted on the Crisis page on the Library website which had been set up to provide personal views of the crisis to members and friends outside of Oaxaca. She continued that “The ‘report’ is little more than propaganda for Mr.Salzmans’s political meddling in Oaxaca and provides support for the activities of the APPO.”

Salzman’s group, Oaxaca Study-Action Group, had invited Stephen Dunifer to address the group. The title of his presentation was “Project TUPA (Transmitters uniting the peoples of the Americas) and Community Radio”.  In more peaceful times, this topic would have been innocuous but in the present situation it wasn’t.  Salzman was advised that the speaker could not meet at the Library and the Crisis page was removed from the website (other viewpoints of the crisis by Janet Stanley and Bill Pumphrey had been posted).

The Board decided that the OSAG group should not meet at the Library as it was politically active and did not follow the Library’s policy against meetings of political or partisan groups. Salzman met with several members of the Library and the Library Board to protest this decision. At that meeting he accused the Board members of being “Karl Rove” conservatives and threatened to make the group’s exclusion “an international incident.”  The Board stands firm in its prohibition against OSAG or any other politically active group meeting on library premises.

After this confrontation, we received an email from Col. Johnathan Poprik Ret. who referred to the OSAG group as a “radical pinko communist group” and he threatened “If you do not comply with the following demands (for names of OSAG participants among other demands), two Mexican citizens will file a complaint against the library and ask for revocation of all rights and licenses necessary for the library to operate in Mexico. Also each participant or member of the library will be called in and investigated by local authorities and immigration. If evidence proves that they were participating in meetings of the illegal group against the Government, they will undergo deportation hearings.”

The Board chose not to respond to Poprik as he is not a member and his charges were NOT BASED ON FACTS.

Rest assured that the Board members collectively and individually are aware of the prohibition against participation in Mexican politics AND WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP THE LIBRARY NEUTRAL AND COMPLIANT WITH MEXICAN LAW.  We ask for your support and understanding in these difficult times as we do our best to steer the Library through these troubled waters.

Bill’s 10 Centavos Worth…

The Library continues to be a refuge for members and friends during this difficult time.  This winter, however, many of our loyal supporters from the cold north will not be returning to share the sunshine with us.  Their participation in Library events has always provided a needed surge in income.  Thanks to the two recent art auctions, the library has good reserves and operations have remained in the black but we will need your support more than ever this winter and spring. Please renew your  membership, participate in Library events, and make a donation (tax deductible in the U.S.) if you possibly can.
An event to mark the Library’s 40th anniversary has been set for December 12th at 6 p.m. Mark your calendars now and don’t forget the upcoming Rummage Sale on December 2nd at Casa Colonial.  Remember too that Pan & Company bring their baked goods to the Library on Monday mornings and folks gather every Thursday at 6 p.m. for movie night.  Come join in the fun and find a new book or meet a new friend.  And don’t forget to pick up your copy of the Members and Friends Directory.
Thank you for caring for your Oaxaca Lending Library.
                                                                          Sincerely, Bill
