Holiday spirit at the OLL
The library has taken on a festive Christmas, holiday
look thanks to two of our wonderful library employees:
Janet Flores Vasquez and Lourdes ( Lulu ) Perez Lopez.
We’re draped in greenery, festooned with banners and
twinkling all over the place. The Christmas tree
greets you when you arrive, so please take a card from
it and share the holiday spirit by giving a gift to an
orphan.
Gretchen Wirtz will arrange for delivery of your new
toys and clothes. We did this last year and everyone
contributed a gift as they came into the Holiday
Brunch, piling the table high for the orphanage. What
a good holiday feeling that gave us!
Tickets for our Annual Holiday Brunch on Sunday, Dec.
17 at 11 a.m
. are 150 pesos for members, 200 for
non-members and 100 for children. This includes brunch
& agua de jamaica at the Casa Colonial, located at
Miguel Negrete 105. There will be a cash bar.
Tickets are available at the library.

40th anniversary party, Dec.12th.
Time has been changed to 5 pm
The OLL will celebrate it’s 40th anniversary year on
Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 5pm, the day of the Virgin of
Guadalupe. There will be a reception and an exhibition
of “Virgin” stat-ues. These were created by friends of
Linda Hannah who invited them to a “creative playday”
last year to honor this day. Please come to see the
artists and their work, have some appetizers - catered
by Rose & Mike Fite - listen to live music with our own Charles Gray and buddies, and toast the longevity of your library! Helen Hines, library
historian, will have on hand a display with photos and
artifacts from the library’s 40 years. No entrance
fee, just join us at the library, Pino Suarez 519.

Rummage sale HUGE SUCCESS !
The annual rummage sale, held last Saturday at Casa
Colonial, was the most successful so far! A group of
dedicated volunteers donated, collected, sorted and
priced thousands of items which sold for more than
30,000 pesos, and the OLL will be in the black at least until
2007!
Linda Hanna did a terrific job on “exotic
finds”,while Geri Anderson and Marga Shubart spent
many hours on many days pricing
the mountains of clothes and other donations.
Martha O’Brien, Amber Western, and Jane Robison
completed the set up crew. Things were well organized
by Saturday.
Amate Books donated some beautiful coffee table
volumes, and Corazon del Pueblo gave some nice
folkart.
At the baked goods table Jayson Hackler’s
cheesecake sold in a hurry, as did Bliss Wilson ’s apple pie
and Teresa’s pecan torts and chilis rellenos.  Rose
Alvarez
baked cookies as did Amber and Bliss.  Coffee,

agua de jamaica and beer were donated by Casa Colonial.
Thanks to those who worked the day of the sale:
David Myler, CJ Byrnes, Amado Bolanos and Thorny
Robison,
cashiers. Judi Warren, women’s clothes, Marga
Shubart
, roving helper, Bill Pumphrey and Enrique
Diaz, electronics, Bliss Wilson, sidewalk table,
Shannon Hogan, library table.
Leftover items will be sold at reduced prices at
the library until Dec. 9.  Thanks to everyone who
contributed to the best bazar ever!

Bill’s 10 centavos worth:
Happy Holidays! Be sure to join your
Library friends at the 40th anniversary celebration on
December 12th and at the Holiday Get-Together on the
17th. The Library has been decorated for the season
and the Christmas tree greets you when you arrive.
Please take a card from the tree and share the holiday
spirit by giving a gift to an orphan. I was at the
orphanage last year when the children opened their
gifts and it was the high point of my holidays. I
invite you to join us there this year. There will be
a sign-up sheet at the Library shortly for those who
want to attend the party.
What a year! And through it all, the Library has
remained a refuge for members and friends. We have
more activities coming up this month, and don’t forget
movies on Thursday nights and Pan & Co. on Mondays.
Before we know it, we’ll be in 2007 and there will be
openings on the Library Board. If you would like to
serve, see the nominating committee members: Paul
Stanley, Geri Anderson, and Teri Gunderson
. There will
be four Board openings. Shannon Hogan who is filling
a partial term as Vice President will run for another
term; Liz Bell’s term as Treasurer will be complete
and that position will be open. Additionally, there
will be two Board Member positions open.
The Library has stood firm against involvement
in political issues in Oaxaca .  I would like to
caution you individually, however, to be aware of how
your nonverbal behavior may be misinterpreted and
cause problems. A Oaxaca radio station had a caller
who reported seeing gringos at Santo Domingo laughing
at some Mexicans. They could simply have been sharing
a joke but in these tense times the caller thought
they were berating some Mexicans. The gringos were
also photographed. So, be aware of all of your
communications, verbal and non-verbal, when you are in
public. It’s more serious than Candid Camera.
A visit to our Library always lifts my spirits.
It is a happy, fun place to be. Thank you for caring
for your Library.
Hope to see you there soon.

Sincerely, Bill                          OLL President

up-to-date on the NY Times’ Bestsellers. However, we
are always looking to update other areasof the

any donations in this area:

Garden club annual potluck party
will be held on Wednesday, December 13. The event
starts at 12:30 instead of 11:00 am. The potluck is at
Pierre and Jan’s and as usual there will be a plant
exchange. Please bring up to three plants to
participate in this event. At the potluck, they also
need to elect a new president. Cathey Lopez, the current
president, has indicated that she wants to step down.
Could you please canvass your friends to see who wants
to be the next president?
The Garden Club sponsored an overnight fern trip,
organized by Cathey Lopez, which was attended by many
OLL members.  Valle Nacional was the destination, and
there were fern hikes along the way.  The “other side
of the mountains” is a tropical paradise, and a real
change from the central valleys.

Unhappy with Oaxaca ?  Take a trip!
That’s been the philosophy of many OLL members in the
past few months, and a gang will take off on Dec. 5
for Mexico City for the “gourmet gringos” excursion
led by Jayson Hackler, which benefits the library.  There
will be field trips to the Dolores Olmedo Museum in
Xochimilco, Frida Kahlo’s house in Coyoacan, the
floating gardens, the Saturday Market, and Chapultapec
Park , as well as many memorable dining experiences,

with an emphasis on Asian and Greek food.

Deaths in the Oaxaca community:
Longtime Oaxaca resident, Eileen (Elena) Carman,
partner of Hugh James, died in her home in
Jalatlacoon November 18, after a long illness. In

her 12 years here, she made many friends and
admirers. She will be missed.

Christina Sanders of Tlalixtac, wife of Milton Sanders
died suddenly after a brief illness.
If we receive information about memorials or services,
we will let you know.

,  ,  ,  ,  ,  ,  ,  ,

The Feria del Maestros de Arte Popular
in Ajijic on Lake Chapala had a big contingent of
Oaxacan folkartists, and a few gringas, too, thanks to
Linda Hanna.  Josefina Aguilar, Jacobo and Maria
Angleles, and many other famous artists from Oaxaca
were hosted by Ajijic residents, after a 22 hour
chartered bus ride. Mariainne Carlson, who has
organized this event for more than five years, did a
wonderful job again this year, and the artists were
very happy on the way home.  There have been no tourists in the villages
in Oaxaca , so this was a much needed venue for their
crafts.
The gringa gang took a trip to Tlaqueplaque, and
another to Tonala to buy pottery. The Lake Chapala
Society has 3,500 members, and sponsors their library
as well as a lecture series, a film series, a
directory of English speaking residents, and a coffee
shop.  Thousands of part-time residents from the U.S.
and Canada spend part of each year around Lake
Chapala , and there’s no graffiti!
