Murder Mystery Night Great Success
The Last Gasp Murder Mystery Night was a great success, thanks to our gracious hosts Tony and Rebecca Raab. Casa Raab, high in San Pablo Etla, is a lovely B & B with many nooks and crannies that were perfect for mayhem and murder. Rebecca Raab coordinated the event and was assisted by David Myler and Ed Petersen. The food was tasty and the murders most foul. Recent comments from the guests are as follows:
Earl of Coddingham, (aka Tony Raab) Through the Queen’s own psychic, Hyacinth Morningstar, The Earl of Coddingham says of his own funeral, “The great outpouring of infamous hospitality and good wishes of all my friends as they kicked me out on my arse was touching.” As to his third wife, and alleged murderess, Lady Coddingham, ”I always suspected that the third time was a charm.”

Lady Coddingham, (aka Linda Hanna) “I found myself in a difficult position which quite surprised me. My husband was a demanding & dishonest person but even if I had wanted him dead I wouldn’t have risked everything. After all I was once the famous entertainer ’Babylon JoJo.’ So frankly, I would like to contact the gentleman who offered his legal services, I think I could use a good lawyer.”
Queen Victoria, (aka Anne Mayagoitia) “Dastardly rude of the Earl to abandon his guests in such an abrupt fashion.”
Martha Dooley (aka Geri Anderson) dim, young, impregnated maid of the Earl says that contributions for the baby are no longer necessary. She and Jeeves, the butler have fled to Australia, leaving Jeeves’ wife and 15 children adrift. She plans on naming the baby …Early.

Well, who would believe that the concept of a restaurant row would exist in Oaxaca? But it’s true. Garcia Vigil is becoming a destination all its own. Not only are La Biznaga, Temple, and the dining area of Casa Oaxaca serving the best food in town, now they are joined by two newcomers, Cafe Brujula and Cafe Royal.
We stopped by last week to try Cafe Brujula and loved it. Located in the space once occupied by La Brew, at Garcia Vigil 409-D, it has been transformed into a comfortable design that is inviting and open, utilizing the high ceilings. With emphasis on freshness, they have designed a casual menu featuring Kyle’s baked goods and a menu that runs from breakfast to late night. Try the waffles for a treat! Don’t miss this new spot. I am sure that it will become a favorite of yours, as soon as you try it.

Thank you Sukey Howard!
Thanks to Sukey Howard of New York, we have many more audio books added to our collection. This is the second time Sukey has made this kind of gift to the library and we are most grateful. Thanks also to Margie Barclay, Sukey’s friend, who schlepped these audio books from New York to us.
Sukey reviews audio books for www.bookpage.com. She will donate audio books to us but prefers to mail them to someone in the US and have them bring them down. She will ation. Pergentino is a small, shy young man who spoke only Huave except when he went to school. He has problems with Spanish and the transition from his small town to the Oaxaca urban life continues to be difficult for him. One of the requirements for receiving the stipend will be attendance at the Learning Center at least two hours a day, three times a week. He will be involved in tutoring, learning touch typing, introduction to the computer and group activities.

Pergentino is 16 years old and comes from San Mateo del Mar, Tehuantepec, a very small pueblo on the Oaxacan coast. His family are campesinos: he has two younger siblings. The family cannot help him and they want him to stay in Oaxaca, go to school and learn to support himself.
is a small, shy young man who spoke only Huave except when he went to school.

Estancia Needs Your Help
Four teams of ten people each will once again provide money for food at the Estancia Fraternidad this year. A commitment of 720 pesos a year is requested, but any amount will be appreciated. Team leaders take 600 pesos to the Estancia every week on Monday afternoon, as shopping is done on Tuesdays. This allows a better diet for those who are staying at the facility, which serves as a sort of “Ronald McDonald House” for patients and their visiting relatives. The Estancia also serves as a hospice. Most of the residents stay for about two weeks and they come from remote regions of Oaxaca and have nowhere else to stay in the city. They pay 10 pesos for three meals a day and a bed but it costs the Estancia about 50 pesos.
Since 1991 more than 700,000 family members have been served. The Estancia has been going for 14 years, and i Byrns at cjbyrns@hotmail.com.

Shannon Hogan, Library VP, recently attended Judy Chicago’s Dinner Party, a feminist art project began in 1974. She was one of more than 200 people who volunteered to make this important idea honoring women come to fruition, working on it from mid-1977 until its completion in 1979. The piece is an open equilateral triangular table, 48 feet on each side, on which sit 39 place settings for women of great historical significance. Upon each intricately embroidered runner is placed a gold ceramic chalice and flatware, a napkin and a fourteen-inch china-painted plate with a central motif based on butterfly and labial forms. The honored women begin in prehistory with the Primordial Goddess and proceed through the 20th century, ending with artist Georgia O’keefe.
Shannon’s work was assembling the 999 names of the mythical and historical women chosen to appear on the Heritage Floor beneath the table. She was one of six team members who then traced and painted the names in gold luster on the 2,300 hand cast porcelain tiles. She was also on another team of six who fabricated the seven Heritage Panels that accompany the piece, listrong>Shannon Hogan In New York

The Library has always been dependent on its members for magazine subscriptions and most subscriptions have expired and not been renewed. Foreign subscription rates are usually about three or four times as expensive as they are in the country of origin. Two hundred dollars from the Rummage Sales has been set aside for these subscriptions but more is needed. Helen Hines has pledged 100 pesos to help. Your donation is needed and will be greatly appreciated. If you can support this effort, please give your donation to David Myler at the Library. Movie Nights Underway

Launched on March 12 by Harry Allard, this fun little book asks: “Is your landlord a scoundrel? Is your electrician an angel?” What else do you want us to know? Write it all down for us in “Slams & Kudos,” which you will find at the entrance desk. If you are allergic to writing, Harry says he will be your amanuensis. ( Yep, I had to look it up!) Ask for him at the library.

Bill’s 10 Centavos Worth
The Library will launch computerized check-out in the near future, a long overdue service for our members and our volunteers who staff the check-out desk. The Board approved the purchase of a software package which is currently used by 5,300 libraries worldwide. We are looking for computer savvy folks who would be interested in helping us in this effort. Let me know if you are interested.

The task could be very daunting with more than 30,000 books to enter in a database but the software offers computerized high speed data entry from the Library of Congress. Additionally, for the past couple of years, donated books have been entered in a database which can be imported into the new program. With high speed internet connectivity already in place, your Library will soon be fully in the 21st Century.
We would also appreciate the donation of a computer which could be used at the check-out desk. It doesn’t havehim at the library. |

I am extremely proud of the Library’s outreach to our host community. More Mexicans than ever are visiting the Library. This created a problem recently when around 20 showed up for the Saturday intercambio but only a couple of English speakers were available. There was a more balanced turnout last weekend and I urge you to come join us on Saturdays, 10-12. It will help your Spanish and make you feel very good.

Another outreach of the Library is scholarships. The Library funded a young lady for midwifery training and a young man from a distant village who is attending secondary school here. The Board just approved support of a young man who is preparing to go to culinary school in a few months. You have probably seen him at the Library selling truffles. He is working hard to reach his goal, his family is ready to help him, and the Board voted to provide $100 per month support, about a quar have to be the latest technology but should be PC Windows ready. |
