NEWS FLASH: Oaxaca has a Jaguar Zoo and it’s full of jaguars, lions, tigers, pumas, birds, snakes, alligators, turtles, sheep, bears, Zebras and, and, and, and, Catch this, most of them aren’t fenced in. Sure, the lions and tigers are, but most of the animals are in habitats encircles with the type of cactus you see out at the archeological site, Mitla.

The Zoo is located about 35 minutes east of Oaxaca, on the highway to Mitla. It cost $65 pesos to enter ($50 with your senior citizen card) and bring a hat and umbrella. The zoo is realitively new and the only thing lacking is shade, but trees are being planted.

Plan a couple hours and visit the souvenier shop for a zoo cup or T-shirt. There is no bus going there so get a taxi and enjoy. This trip is worth the time and it’s the only zoo in Oaxaca, except those days when you feel like you’re in one at the Zocalo.
